Shabuway

This post is from quite a while back, just never got around to posting it. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to visit the holy grail of shabu shabu  in San Mateo to take pictures if their tasty food.

So glad I got to eat the food models when we were done!

Goku Ramen

Akiko and I were lucky enough to attend Goku Ramen’s opening night in the Mission. On 16th, just above Guerrero, it’s a good  addition to the Mission’s dining options. Appetizers shined (especially edamame crab salad and the chili shrimp) and although the “Goku Spicy” ramen didn’t seem crazy hot at first, it built up pretty quickly. Good food at a good price point with an interesting selection of local and Japanese craft beers.

Mojitos & Fresh Pasta

Funny, sometimes the drinks are more of a focus than the food.

I blended a handful of fresh mint in rum and poured it through a sieve to try to extract the mint oil and leave behind the annoying bits of mint leaves that get suck in your teeth. Mixed in lime juice and simple syrup and topped with seltzer. The absinth like cloudiness is the oil and water not being soluble with each other. The rum didn’t extract as much mint oil – next time I’ll do this with 151, and we’ll see how it goes… But I do think I’m on the way to the ideal mojito!

The pasta was pretty basic, handmade from semolina flour. Sauteed in olive oil with shallot, garlic, fresh oregano, a tomato, a red chili and some salt & pepper.

BBQ with a Japanese flair

Pretty basic, good mid-week meal. Akiko made a tasty salad based on cucumber, tomato and cold, sliced chicken breast. The dressing balanced it out nicely. Tri-tip is my grilling standby choice for steak. Quality of the meat is super important, and surprisingly enough what Costco sells is quite good. Akiko made up a tasty sweet, sesame sauce we coated the steak with in the final moments of the grilling, which made for a nice coating.

Burgers

I love grilling burgers. I really do, and I have since before it was cool to wait an hour in line and pay $15 for one in a part of town where it’s impossible to park. Light, thin bun, richly flavored ground beef, avocado and some grilled serranos… I just ate one, and it still makes me happy to think about it. Oven fries (cut up russets, coated with olive oil and roasted in the oven) and a salad round it out. Oh yeah, and some fresh oysters we picked up at the farmer’s market. Pictures tell the story…
